The joy of commuting
Trundling out of bed early on a cold, grey morning when all others seem to be asleep, waiting at your usual spot on the platform (exactly where the door lines up) then fighting for a seat is not fun.
Nor is it enjoyable when the person next to you is playing their music too loud, the person opposite is eating a smelly Egg McMuffin and the people behind are – god forbid – having an actual conversation! All seasoned rail commuters know that talking is not allowed in the morning.
The problem is that you have to do it. Driving is not an option and working at home doesn’t suit your role. Surely there must be ways in which you can make the journey more pleasant?
Distraction is key when it comes to commuting, especially when it’s dark outside and you can’t even gaze out of the window. The number one resource for any commuter is, of course, the humble book. It is possible to be so engrossed in a story that you can forget entirely where you are.
However, it can be hard to concentrate on a book when people are chattering and chomping around you, that’s why audio books are a far better option. Download a book onto your MP3 player and tune out all the external noise. You can shut your eyes and really absorb yourself in the narrative. Just make sure you don’t miss your stop!
Rather than using your smart phone, table or laptop to do some work, why not catch up on last night’s television or that favourite film? A half hour soap can provide pure escapism and allow you to go to bed a bit earlier the night before. Watch out for those looking over your shoulder, though.
Exercise your brain by doing a crossword, word puzzle or sudoku, which you can still find in newspapers – great news for those still living in the 20th century whose mobile phone is only a phone.
If you think that’s a bit dull, then indulge in a spot of people watching. Guess what people do for a living, where they’re going to get off the train and who they are going home to. Try not to make eye contact, of course, which like talking is another cardinal sin.
If all else fails, there’s always sleep!
